Shammi was introduced as child star in film Shahida (1949) and had a supporting role in film Be-Qarar (1950). She was first actress in Pakistan who got her first film as heroine as her own film name Shammi in 1950. This Punjabi film was produced by famous singer Malika Pukhraj (mother of famous singer Tahira Syed) who also owned a film studio in Lahore.

Shammi was seen in 13 movies, 12 Urdu and a single Punjabi film. Her famous film Ruhi (1954) was first banned film in Pakistan. Ghulam, Ilzam, Mehbooba, Tarrap (1953), Khizan kay baad, Sohni (1955) and Pawwan (1956) were other movies.

During the making of film Tarrap (1953), she got married with Sudhir and left film industry, but completed two movies Sahil (1960) and Bagawat (1963) with her husband, who was also the producer of these films.

Shammi was born as Shamshad Begum in Delhi in 1937. She was younger sister of famous character actress Salma Mumtaz. She died on July 8, 2001 in Lahore.
