The film story
The story of a selfless and loyal girl who sacrifices her love and even her life for the survival of her beloved's family.
During a picnic between college boys and girls at a secluded place, "Jugnu" (Noor Jehan) and "Sooraj" (Dilip Kumar) fall in love and make a promise to give their lives for their love.
As usual, their love is blocked by the iron wall of traditional society, which is the old war between rich and poor. Sooraj's father, "Rai Bahadur" (Ghulam Muhammad), wants his son to marry the daughter of a rich man instead of a poor girl like "Jugnu" so that he can pay off his debts with the dowry she brings, which is the basis for such false talk.
"Sooraj" learns of his father's artificial glory and splendor, but persists in his stubbornness. In such a situation, his mother (Jalubai) meets "Jagnu" and convinces her to make "Sooraj" think badly of her so that she can marry him and save her family's reputation.
Noorjehan, heartbroken, agrees and after making Dilip Kumar think badly of her, before dying on her deathbed, consumed by the fire of love and sacrifice, she also sends Jalubai the money she receives as a reward in a letter. She also needs this money because the jewel given to Ghulam Mohammad in the dowry is fake.
Jagnu's letter to her mother falls into the hands of "Sooraj" and he comes to know the truth. He reaches her but it is too late and she dies in his arms. "Sooraj" also commits suicide by jumping off a hill and drowning in the river at the same picnic spot where they had declared their loyalty.
