His real name was Mohammad Iqbal but he got the nick name as Bahoo from his unique singing style of the poetry of holy saint Sultan Bahoo (reh). He also sang other spiritual Punjabi poets like Waris Shah, Mian Mohammad Bakhsh, Shah Hussain etc.
Iqbal Bahoo wished to become playback singer but failed due to resistance by film director Pervez Malik in his film Dushman (1974). Legend music director Nisar Basmi was an admirer of Iqbal's singing ability and wanted him to sing the song:
- Apna Lahu Phir Apna Lahu Hay..
but could not give him any chance due to the monopoly of professional film singers.
Iqbal Bahoo died on March 24, 2012 at Lahore. He was 68 years old.
